School Board Fails to Advance Budget

March 12, 2018 – School Board Meeting

Editor’s Note: At the February 26th meeting the school board voted to change the meeting date from March 19th to March 12th to discuss potential candidates for a vacant school board position. If they mentioned changing the time of the meeting, it was not clear to the citizens attending. So I, along with 3 other rather surprised looking people, arrived at 7:30 to find a meeting already in progress. And, apparently, we missed a big fight over the budget. Confusion only increased when we looked at the agenda which clearly listed the meeting time as 7:30 p.m., not 6:30.

Agenda Items

I missed both the discussion about the applicants for the school board position and Item V: Financial Board Considerations.

Item VI: Two votes on this were split at 4 to 4 so the motion failed. This motion is required under ACT 1 and would have allowed the Proposed budget to be advertised to the public. With a ‘no’ vote, it is possible that Nazareth Area School District is now in violation of state law. No one on the board looked happy after the meeting adjourned.

Item VIII passed. You can find a link to the agenda here: https://www.nazarethasd.k12.pa.us/Page/1024

Announcements

The board praised the school bus drivers for getting all the students home safely during Winter Storm Riley.

The Wrestling Team has achieved back-to-back state championships.

Becky Bartlett covers these meetings because residents have a right to know what their government is doing but this might get more difficult in the future. The School Board is talking about changing the schedule again and altering the time of board meetings beginning in April.
