September 17, 2018 – School Board Meeting
Absent: Jodi Mammana and Linda Stubitz. Denise Glaros arrived late.
Facilities Report
Some of the projects have been delayed due to the constant rain.
The water heaters at the High School and Butz Elementary have been replaced.
Replacing the High School roof was a two-Summer process. Delayed by bad weather, the contractor expects to be finished soon.
The Baseball field needs to get the sod established soon to be ready for play in the Spring. They expect it to be finished sometime in mid-October.
Butz Elementary had a factory-delay issue with their Air conditioning units. The installation should be finished this weekend and operational soon.
The wood for the High School gym floor has been delivered. It should be installed by November.
Lead testing of the water has been conducted and NASD schools are under the federal limits.
Snacks and Unhealthy Food in the Cafeteria
A 40-plus minute conversation about snacks and unhealthy food choices took place with Kathryn Roberts reporting about observing lunch at one of the elementary schools. She pointed out that a lot of the options were not healthy (Slushies, waffles, syrup, popcorn, soft pretzels, ice cream, etc.) and that other countries don’t serve junk food to school children. She noticed that the children who packed their lunches brought healthy food like fruit, salads and sandwiches. Principal Mudlock said, at Shafer, students can pick a snack on 2 days and ice cream on another 2 days.
Agenda Items
Items 7, 9 & 11 passed. Lynn Chromiak Sadler will become the Acting Assistant Principal at the Intermediate School on Sept. 18th, with her appointment to be reviewed in October.
